To ensure that plants quickly take root in a new place and do not stop growing, when planting vegetable seedlings in open ground, you need to take into account important rules. For better memorization, we have placed this information in visual tables.
Some vegetable crops are particularly sensitive to changes in habitat. Therefore, they need to be provided with the most comfortable conditions. Otherwise, all the efforts you put into growing seedlings will be in vain.
How to prepare a bed for seedlings
In open ground, a bed is selected taking into account previous crops. For good growth of seedlings, the soil must be carefully prepared and fertilized. When growing vegetables in the unstable climate of the middle zone, it would not be superfluous to install arcs and prepare a covering material (for example, spunbond).
If the soil in the garden is light and sandy, warms up well, but does not retain moisture well, then it is better to plant the seedlings in a deep trench or on a flat area. Heavy clay soil, on the contrary, warms up longer and retains moisture better, so in this case it is better to grow vegetables on high (raised) beds.
However, it is not enough to just properly prepare a new “home” for plants; you need to make sure that its “residents” are healthy, because there is little use in frail seedlings.
Signs of quality seedlings
The plants should not show any signs of disease or pest infestation, since only healthy and strong seedlings are the key to a rich harvest.
In addition, before “moving” to open ground, seedlings must reach a certain height. Moreover, each crop has its own indicators.
How to properly plant seedlings in the ground
It is important to adhere to the scheme and depth of planting vegetable crops. To accurately measure the depth of the hole, you can use a planting cone with a measuring scale that is pointed at the bottom.
Also, keep in mind: if the seedlings are planted together with a lump of earth or a peat pot, then before planting, 100-200 ml of Fitosporin-M solution is poured into each hole (40-50 ml of the preparation is diluted in 10 liters of water). If you forgot to do this, the same solution can be poured under the roots of the plants 3 days after planting them in the ground.
To prevent fungal diseases, seedlings that are planted with bare roots can also be treated. To do this, plant roots are immersed in the same Fitosporin-M solution for 1-1,5 hours. 1 liter of the working solution should be enough for 100-150 seedlings.
How to feed seedlings after planting
In the first few weeks after planting, seedlings need careful care, otherwise the plants may not take root. In addition to regular watering and protection from low temperatures, vegetables need to be fed. The first feeding is carried out no earlier than a week after planting the plants in the ground.
Save these tables so you don’t lose them. And if you follow all the rules, then a bountiful harvest of vegetables will not keep you waiting.
